AstraZeneca reveals details of 1,600 job cuts

ASTRAZENECA has announced major restructuring of its R&D operations which will see 1,600 jobs cut and the end of drug research at its Alderley Park site in Cheshire, UK. Small molecule and biologies R&D will be refocussed in three "strategic centres" - Cambridge in the UK, Gaithersburg in the US and Molndal in Sweden. It will spend US$500m building a new centre for life sciences in Cambridge with links to major research institutions in London. AstraZeneca says this will build on its existing protein research capabilities in Cambridge.
