Studies on egg shell powder as filler in polypropylene

Eggshells can be utilized for various purposes to minimize environmental pollution. Eggshells are the best natural source of calcium. The aim of present work is that application of egg shell powder as filler in polypropylene. A treatment of NaOH-Isophthalic acid was given to egg shell powder and was examined by spectroscopic analysis. Blending of polypropylene with egg shell powder was carried out by means of extruder. Injection moulded articles of treated and non-treated egg shell powder- polypropylene blend were prepared for the analysis of their mechanical properties. Modification of egg shell powder with NaOH-Isophthalic acid has shown a substantial improvement in the mechanical properties due to strong interaction between egg shell powder and polypropylene.
