After keeping it on the shelf for five years, Suncor Energy and its partners have given a green light for development of the C$13.5 billion (US$12.9 billion) Fort Hills oil sands mining project in the Athabasca region of northern Alberta. The Suncor-operated project is expected to start producing by late 2017 and reach 90% of its full capacity of 180,000 barrels per day within 12 months. French oil major Total has a 39.2% stake in the project, while Canadian mining giant Teck Resources holds 20%.
