SINGAPORE -- Iron ore and alumina production at Anglo-Australian miner Rio Tinto rose strongly in the second quarter as the company continued to produce at close to capacity across most of its operations. Production of iron ore rose 15 percent year-on-year to 32.2 million tonnes in the period, Rio Tinto said in a review of its second quarter operations released on July 20. Production for the first half of 2005 was 59.8 million tonnes, an increase of 16 percent compared with the corresponding period of last year. The company's Hamersley Iron ore operations produced at record levels in both the second quarter and the first half of the year. Production in the first six months of the year was 41.5 million tonnes, an increase of 21 percent.
