Campaign against gestation crates will continue, HSUS pledges

Buoyed by a long list of big-name companies that have announced plans to move away from pork originating at establishments that use metal gestation crates, the Humane Society of the United States says it will continue to focus its efforts on that task for the remainder of 2012. That's bad news for the pork industry, which saw a large number of its major buyers yield to HSUS in the first half of the year. McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Sonic, Hardee's, Carl's Jr., and retailers - including Safeway and Kroger - all joined food service companies Bon Appetit and the Compass Group in pledging to make their pork supply chain, within a decade, stop confining pregnant swine in crates until giving birth.
