Medicinal plants in treatment of different forms of tuberculosis (review of Russian-language literature).

An analysis of the literature identified around 150 species of vascular plants from Russia and neighbouring countries, used separately or in combination in folk medicine and phytotherapy for the treatment of different forms of tuberculosis, including pulmonary tuberculosis. Under clinical conditions, the most effective species appear to be Allium cepa, A. sativum, Mentha piperita, Myrtus communis and Origanum vulgare. At present, medicinal preparations for tuberculosis are obtained only from plantmaterial of the introduced species A. sativum, A. cepa, Eucalyptus globulus and M. communis. Essential oils, and aerosols based on essential oils of Eucalyptus, Hyssopus officinalis and Hypericum perforatum, have shown positive therapeutic effects, as have the essential oils of Artemisia scoparia, M. piperita, O. vulgare, Thymus, Ziziphora and other species.
