Several synthetically useful reactions have been explored by the use of cerium(III) chloride, metallic samarium, samarium(II) iodide, and cerium(IV) compounds. The carbonyl addition reactions organolithiums or Grignard reagents in the presence of cerium(III) chloride proceed smoothly without undesired side reactions such as enolization to affords the corresponding alcohols in high yields. A new method for the evaluation of relative strength of Lewis acidities of rare earth triflates has been explored by the use of X-ray crystallography and tandem mass spectrometry.
