SCAA and ECX seek solutions to specialty coffee questions

In recent months the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) has been working closely with the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) to resolve problems arising from the Ethiopian authorities' decision to trade all coffee -commercial grade and specialty coffee - through the ECX. The ECX was established a little over a year ago with the stated purpose of improving transparency and efficiency in Ethiopian commodity markets. However, as a commodity, rather than speciality-focused organisation, the ECX presents unique opportunities and challenges for the specialty coffee industry. The SCAA began interacting directly with ECX last April to address the needs of the sector, with the goal of including specialty coffee standards and practices in the ECXand the Ethiopian coffee market in general.
