Repair of ruptured tunica albuginea of penis-experienced two different approaches

Rupture of tunica albuginea of penis, commonly termed fractured penis is best treated by early surgical repair of the ruptured site. Results of two different surgical approaches were compared in this study. Thirteen patients with ruptured penis without associated urethral injury were treated over a period of 15 years. All the tears in the tunica albuginea were repaired using Interrupted knot-burying stitches of delayed absorbable material. In the first 6 patients the tears were accessed by degloving the penis. In the rest incisions were made directly over the tear. The operative time, blood loss and hospital-stay favoured the second approach since the outcome regarding ability to have adequate pain-free erection without lateral deviation and satisfactory coitus were same in both the groups. Direct incision over the site of rupture to repair the tunical tear under local anaesthesia in fractured penis without urethral injury is an easier option without compromising the outcome.
