Focal acral hyperkeratosis and acrokeratoelastoidosis: birds of a feather?

We read with considerable interest the contribution by Khamaysi et al. in the current issue of the Journal of European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology. The authors report on the interesting finding of focal acral hyperkeratosis (FAH) associated with dystrophy of all 10 fingernails in a 50-year-old woman. Histologic examination of a skin biopsy did not show elastorrhexis and, consequently, a diagnosis of FAH was made.Although Khamaysi et al. state that nail dystrophy in FAH had not been previously reported, we would like to direct their attention to a publication from 1999 describing a 63-year-old woman with FAH who also revealed a distal dystrophy of the fingernails.
