This work presents an approach for improving the kinematic and dynamic characteristics of plate cam mechanisms by using Fourier series as the input speed trajectory. Kinematic and dynamic analysis models for a variable-speed plate cam mechanism are derived first. The speed trajectories of cams are obtained by employing Fourier series functions, and motion continuity conditions are investigated. The kinematic design is proposed for improving motion characteristics and motion adaptation. And, the dynamic design involves the design models for improving the contact force and reducing the input torque. Four examples are provided for the design models to illustrate the design process. Finally, an experimental setup is established and the measured data prove the feasibility for the proposed approach.
