The foundations for the Journal of Studies of Alcohol and Drugs (JS AD) grew out of the efforts of the Yale Laboratory of Applied Physiology, which was founded at Yale University in 1920 by two physicians, Yandell Henderson, M.D., and Howard Haggard, M.D. Initially, the laboratory's activities focused on respiratory physiology and toxicology, both in theory and in practice. The work included the effects of poisoning in natural settings, such as had been experienced in World War I, and the control of noxious gases in the Holland Tunnel. Although scientists in the laboratory initially had little interest in alcohol, during the late 1920s Henderson, Haggard, and other laboratory scientists published a series of articles on human metabolism and physiology related to alcohol consumption.
