摘要

MY 16-YEAR-OLD son is a typical teenager; one that that a researcher might regard as a product of "Generation M2," the multimedia generation (Rideout, Foehr, & Roberts, 2010). My son is technologically connected or "wired" (cell phone, computer, and video game, with talking head set). He explains that, "This is the way that kids hang out these days. This is what we do." I am a big proponent of technology (or I would not be writing this column); however, I do believe that parents have a responsibility to provide children with guidance for the safe use of technology. Raising three teenagers, I have been witness to lewd text messages, cyber bullying, and violent video game playing. At times, my children have gone too far, and I have had to assume the role of the "evil humanoid mother" saving them from their virtual abyss.
