A 16-year-old white female soccer player presents to the clinic with several painful, rapidly enlarging, red, fluctuant dermal nodules with surrounding erythema and induration on the posterior thigh and lower leg. Accompanying symptoms include fever, chills, malaise, nausea, and vomiting of a few days' duration (Figure 1). She reports frequent skin abrasions and cuts during soccer practice. A dermatology consult is ordered.
