Relatively rare entity of avascular necrosis of maxillary bone caused by Gaucher's disease - A case report

Avascular necrosis is cellular death of bone components due to interruption of the blood supply. Without the vascular supply, the bone tissue dies and the bone collapses. It can affect any bone, but most commonly affects the epiphysis of the long bones. The disease can affect just one bone, more than one bone at the same time, or more than one bone at different times. The most commonly associated risk factors for avascular necrosis of the bone include chemotherapy, alcoholism, excessive steroid use, trauma, caisson disease, vascular compression, hypertension, vasculitis, arterial embolism, radiotherapy, bisphosphonates, sickle cell anemia, Gaucher's disease, and deep diving.
