A method to estimate the service life of a spur evolvent cylindrical gear pair was proposed. The calculation model takes into account an elliptic variation in pressure along the contact area of teeth, as well as teeth wear. Calculation is done under the condition that the worn surface profile varies smoothly and in consequence the radius of evolvent and the radius of surface curvature differ little at a reference point. The consideration of these factors allows one to define the design value of gear pair service life.
