The objective of this work was to standardize and evaluate the potential of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) as a rapid and cost effective method to estimate the oil and protein contents in the intact-seed sample of rapeseed-mustard varieties. A total of 47 samples of rapeseed-mustard varieties were analyzed for oil content by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and protein content by Kjeldahl method. Their values were, used for NIRS calibrations for oil and protein contents. The pre-analyzed 47 seed samples (3 g intact seed) were then scanned by NIRS (Dicky John Instalab 600, NIR Product Analyzer) for oil and protein contents.. Calibration for seed protein content was comparatively less accurate; the values of correlation and coefficient of determination were 0.872 and 0.761, respectively. Very low standard error differences for the mean value of oil (SED = 0.155) and for the mean value of protein (SED = 0.299) indicated results obtained for oil content either by NMR or NIR and for protein content either by Kjeldahl method or NIR being equally good.
