Bodner states that knowledge cannot be transferred from a teacher to a student; it must be actively constructed by the learner (1). Active learning, making the students active participants in their courses and their learning, is one goal of today's educators. However, it is often difficult to find active-learning techniques that are successful in large classes. In addition, many educators feat that these techniques take up valuable class time and may prevent students from getting through the material that needs to be covered. This is often a dilemma for college teachers of general chemistry. College classes are often quite large and the amount of material covered on the standardized ACS general chemistry exam is vast. However, many chemistry teachers have found successful ways in which to incorporate active-learing practics into large introductory lectures (2,3).
