The concept of stem cells-that the body creates unspecialized cells that can renew themselves and give rise to any of the differentiated cells in the body-has been around for at least a century. The discovery of stem cells in the 1960s has been followed by robust investigations on their vast clinical potential. In 1995, Thomson and his team succeeded in deriving embryonic stem cells from nonhuman primates.
