Hypertension control and cardiovascular outcomes among patients with diabetes and coronary artery disease.

In their observational study, Dr Cooper-DeHoff and colleagues presented subgroup analyses of 6400 patients with diabetes, aged 50 years and older, in the International Verapamil SR-Trandolapril Study (INVEST). This study showed that tight control of systolic blood pressure (BP) among diabetic patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) was not associated with better cardiovascular outcomes. Moreover, in the analyses with extended follow-up, the all-cause mortality risk was even higher in the tight control group compared with the usual control group (hazard ratio, 1.15; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-1.32).
