Study on the anti-wear property of mixed base oil between pentaerythritol ester and polyphenyl ether

The effect of the ratio of mixing of PE ester and polyphenyl ether in mixed base oils, consisting of pentaerythritol ester (PE ester) and polyphenyl ether, on anti-wear property was determined by using a Shell four-bali tester. It was found that the anti-wear property of polyphenyl ether (m-phenoxyphenoxy m-biphenyl: m-4P2E and pentaphenyl ether: 5P4E) was very poor. When PE ester was admixed to polyphenyl ether in an amount of 20-60 wt %, the resulting anti-wear property was higher than that of base oil alone. It was suggested that mixed base oil significantly reduced the surface tension, improved the wettability, and promoted the supply of oil to sliding metal surfaces. When using mixed base oil with improved anti-wear property, formation of a graphite layer, the thickness of which was larger than that of a layer forming in the presence of base oil alone, was observed after the Shell four-ball tests. Mechanisms of improvement of the anti-wear property by mixed base oil were determined.
