In the naval vessels of the 1980s and 1990s, locked train gear systems with a power split feature were used in combined diesel or gas turbine propulsion systems (CODOG) to achieve the combination of economical low-speed cruising or loitering, under diesel power, and fast acceleration with high maximum speeds or sprinting, under gas turbine power Typically, ships of 2500 to 5500 tons needed around 40 MW of power from two gas turbines in the 20 to 25 MW output class, driving two controllable pitch propellers via double reduction gears in separate propulsion trains. The power split feature on the gas turbine gears is designed to minimize weight and installation space by allowing one pair of gears to transmit only half the torque from the gas turbine. For loitering, diesel engines drive the propellers via separate input gear trains, while the gas turbine gear rotates without load.
