The year 1911 not only marks the year of the Chinese revolution, when aristocratic monarchy was overthrown, it also marks a historic milestone for China's diesel engine manufacturing. Hip Tung Wo Machinery Factory, the predecessor of Guangzhou Diesel Engine Factory (GDF), was also founded in 1911, and in just four years the factory produced China's first indigenously developed diesel engine - a water-cooled two-stroke single-cylinder engine. At the end of World War II and after the founding of the People's Republic in 1949, with state funding, Hip Tung Wo resumed production. In August 1966, Hip Tung Wo was formally renamed Guangzhou Diesel Engine Factory. The model 6300 marine diesel engine, with an output of 294 kW, was launched the same year; the factory subsequently succeeded in producing China's first-ever spheroidal graphite cast-iron crankshaft with maximum cross section.
