摘要

Recently I was visited at home by a second-year chemistry student from the University of Melbourne. It was a sheer delight to witness his enthusiasm about his studies and his love of learning. These are the moments that make teaching so worthwhile. What particularly interested me were his comments about chemistry practical work. He said he just loves it because it helps him understand the concepts far better, satisfies his natural curiosity and interest and gives him the opportunity him to see how chemistry relates to real-world applications. Together with some inspirational lectures, it has influenced his decision to undertake research in biochemistry. Before this experience, he had wanted to focus on studying medicine.
