Clamour for Native Beef brings opportunity for Dairy Farmers

With the spotlight suddenly on native beef breeds for supplying retailers' premium brands, there is an opportunity for dairy farmers to cash in.That is the view of the National Beef Association whose National Director, Chris Mallon, warned dairy men that they needed to be using good quality native breed sires across their cows, and not run-of-the-mill bulls which might do little more than colour-mark their calves.Mr Mallon said: "The accent in the fresh beef market is quite suddenly on the production of large numbers of grass-fed steers and heifers, bred from Hereford, Aberdeen-Angus or Beef Shorthorn bulls, which can attract retail premiums on the back of predictable provenance, taste and tenderness.
