Lilies for beginners

The lily has always had a reputation for being temperamental and tricky to grow. It's not entirely undeserved, for many of the 80 or so species are very fussy about climate and soil and growing them is a real test of the gardener's skills. On the other hand, hybrid lilies are a staple in flower shops everywhere, even consenting to being forced into bloom at times other than their natural summer season; and they wouldn't be if they were difficult to grow.
