Two families take the fence down and garden together

In adjoining farmhouse gardens, mother and daughter-in-law took down the fence and planted together, creating one large old-fashioned edible garden. Twenty-five years ago, South African newlyweds Kim and Ian moved onto a farm right next door to his parents' property - the farm Ian grew up on. His mother, Ola, was an enthusiastic gardener who began establishing her garden when she was a newlywed. Now it's well established and sprawls densely around the old farmhouse, but the garden around Kim and Ian's neighbouring Victorian-style house, built in 1904, was bleak. Luckily, Kim wanted a garden, loved the rambling free-form look of her mother-in-law's and soon after moving in, plunged into the job of creating her own version, (cont.)
