A.I. Sandy Williamson, President, NACE International, USA, explains how to decrease the US$2.5 trillion global cost of corrosion. In 1975, the automotive industry created one of the most significant corrosion prevention success stories in history. Through a co-ordinated and balanced effort between advances in design, materials and processing, the industry was able to move from minimal corrosion control practices, where an automobile's life was determined by the corrosion of its body and frame, to state-of-the-art corrosion control through advanced painting/coating technology and the use of corrosion-resistant materials.
