Rosneft and Exxon Mobil are gearing up for two possible LNG projects, one in Arctic Alaska and the other in the Russian Far East subarctic. The Russian state energy giant doesn't yet have an official stake in Exxon's proposed Alaska South Central LNG project, but both Exxon and Alaska state officials tell WGI they expect Rosneft to get involved. The Russian company has an option to take 25% of the Exxon-operated Point Thomson unit that will supply gas to the project, which it is expected to exercise. Speculation also centers on the eventual fate of BP's holdings on the North Slope: Its oil assets are depleting, and the UK major may determine that selling its gas interests is required to fund post-Macondo liabilities. Rosneft is seen as a logical buyer, WGI is told.
