EU Turns Spotlight On Bulgaria

The long arm of the European Commission has again reached to Bulgaria, where Brussels last week opened a formal investigation into whether Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH) and two subsidiaries are monopolizing the country's gas infrastructure in breach of EU antitrust rules. Brussels is concerned that state-owned BEH, supply subsidiary Bulgargaz and gas network subsidiary Bulgartransgaz may be making it impossible for potential rivals to compete by refusing or delaying third party access to the gas network and storage facilities, and reserving pipeline capacity that is not used. The probe could last one or two years.
