Australia/New Zealand: state, territorial governments agree to coordinate food safety regulation

Wellington--An agreement aimed at creating a more coordinated and effective approach to food safety has been signed by Australia's prime minister and the premiers and chief ministers of all Australian states and territories. Warren Truss, the federalagriculture, fisheries and forestry minister, and Senator Grant Tumbling, the parliamentary secretary for health and aged care, said that the new agreement would mean important changes to Australia's food regulatory system. Truss and Tambling said the new agreement would streamline the process of developing food standards while at the same time retaining ministerial accountability.
