The UK pig industry can demonstrate world class efficiency. It's the beacon of light that shines out of the Curry report. And that's why it cannot be allowed to fail this year. The industry's lead organisations have put everything on hold in a concerted bid to achieve price recovery... The UK pig industry is the shining model on which the Curry report is built - but once again critically low prices have placed pig producers on the edge of a precipice. As Pig World went to press senior representatives of the industry's lead organisations were working on a formula to improve prices and restore producer confidence. It is feared that unless action is taken quickly, the pig industry will halve this year. A multi-stranded approach will involve immediateaction to ensure retailers, processors and politicians play their part in bolstering prices in the short term, to give producers the breathing space to implement medium and long term strategies. Cereal growers will also be urged to play their part - toward off catastrophic grain prices in 2003. Current pig prices of under 90p a kilo are between 10p and 15p a kilo below cost of production, depending on whether units have PMWS or not.
