In a truly international, interdisciplinary research and marketing effort involving a variety of participants - nutritionists, biologists, government and feed corporations - dietary supplements have emerged to lift the performance of gestating and lactating swine to amazing levels. In the early 1990s, Fuller Bazer joined the faculty of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, CISA as a professor of physiology close to the same time that Quoyao Wu, began as an animal nutritionist. At that time,Wu was studying the levels of an amino acid known as arginine in new-born piglets. Their research intersected one day when Bazer's assistant attended one of Wu's first lectures and asked if the unborn foetus could synthesise arginine? "This was a very fascinating question," Wu says. "It was one I had not yet asked myself."
