Prion diseases have become a public health issue since the occurrence of variant Creutzfeldt-Disease (vCJD) in man linked to the contamination with the bovine infectious agent. In a first time, public health protection measures have been implemented to secure bovine meat products entering the human food chain. The advances made in the knowledge of the pathogenesis of the disease and new data showing a possible iatrogenic transmission of vCJD via blood products have highlighted the necessity to protect also human health against the iatrogenic risk. Consequently, new protection measures have been taken encompassing donor deferral, leucoreduction of labile and stable blood products, together with the investigation or even the modification of manufacturing processes for extractive products.
