With another new model waiting in the wings, Peter Noad charts the full history of the (first) New Beetle. IN 1991, Volkswagen set up a design studio in Simi Valley California, tasked with 'identifying trends and developing visions' with particular relevance to the North American market. Well aware that Volkswagen's previous success in the USA had been closely linked with the original Beetle, the designers considered recreating the classic 'People's Car'.
