THE Pir Panjal Railway Tunnel is part of the New Broad (1.676 m) gauge rail line for the Jammu-Kashmir Rail Link Project from Udhampur to Srinagar and Baramulla in northern India. The tunnel across the Pir Panjal range, which forms the border of Jammu and the Kashmir Valley is one of the key structures of this new line. After its completion, it will be the longest railway tunnel in India. It is located between the proposed railway stations of Banihal (Jammu) in the South and Qazigund (Kashmir) in the North. Indian Northern Railway is the owner of the new Railway Line and has appointed IRCON International Ltd. as Construction Manager. Following an international tender IRCON awarded, in January 2004, the detail design and construction supervision works to a JV of Geoconsult of Austria and RITES Ltd, India.
