UK - A prototype flywheel Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) system is due to be tested in a Wrightbus StreetLite midi-bus at the Millbrook Proving Ground later this quarter, Wrightbus of Ballymena announced at a press conference at the end of November. The so called Flybrid project involving five partners - bus builder, Wrights Group Ltd of Ballymena, flywheel and KERS specialist, Flybrid Automotive Ltd of Silverstone, transmission component supplier, Voith Turbo of Heidenheim, Germany, low volume manufacturer, Productiv Ltd of London and German-owned transport operator, Arriva Plc - was set up in 2012 to develop a hybrid bus using a flywheel to recover braking energy and provide traction power to the bus when it moves away.
