MOE Encouraging Environmental Investments In Private Sector

Ministry of Environment (MOE) is now actively encouraging positive approaches toward environment investments by private sector entities as well as local autonomies with the objective of trimming of greenhouse effect gas emission. The solid prospect on ratification of the Kyoto Protocol by Russia puts spurs to efforts of Japan to promote countermeasures against global heating. If and when the Protocol becomes effective, Japan is obliged to reduce by 6 percent emission of carbon dioxide in five years from 2008 to 2012 as compared with that in 1990. Since it seems quite difficult to achieve the reduction target if things go on unchanged, the Ministry considers it imperative to tackle with the matter not only by governmental level but also by various parties including enterprises, private bodies, general inhabitants, local autonomies and so forth.
