U.S. Black Liquor Credits Continue to Rise

The alternative fuel excise tax credits for 21 of the largest publicly traded U.S. pulp and paper companies that produce kraft pulp totaled more than $2.85 billion through June 30, according to their filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).The amount received has been heavily loaded into the companies' second quarter results - roughly $1.75 billion of the $2.85 billion total - because many of them didn't apply immediately to be an alternative fuel mixer with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and hadn't received actual cash until after March. Some non-received, but approved, tax credits were treated as receivables.
