The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has ordered Pfizer to withdraw an advertisement aimed at medical professionals which the agency said made "potentially misleading" claims about the company's antibiotic Zyvox (linezolid). The advertisement, which appeared in the British Medical Journal, claimed that Zyvox, an antibiotic used to treat certain types of serious infections, had superior cure rates compared with products containing vancomycin. The agency became aware of the advertisement at the time that it was in discussions with the company about emerging concerns relating to the efficacy and safety of linezolid compared with vancomycin in a clinical trial in patients with catheter-related infections.
