Counter-Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) - The UK's Approach to Managing a Coherent Capability

IMPROVISED Explosive Devices (IEDs) are an enduring global threat, and are likely to continue to be the weapon of choice for the UK's adversaries. To effectively counter IEDs an international, cross government and multi-disciplinary approach is required, which uses both offensive and defensive methods to defeat the threat. This article aims to describe the systematic approach adopted by UK Defence's C-IED Programme Office to managing C-IED as a coherent capability, that is delivered by a wide ranging network of Defence, other Governmental departments and industry stakeholders. It is intended for those not directly involved in delivering the capability, but for whom C-IED has relevance, including industry, the science and technology community, academia and members of the general public.
