what is Agenda 21?

Agenda 21 is an uninspiring name for a very inspiring document: the agreement setting out a blueprint for world sustainable development which was signed by the 150 governments at the Earth Summit, Rio de Janiero, in 1992. It aims to marry social, economic and environmental concerns to produce a holistic vision for the world in the 21st Century. No-one is saying that it is perfect -there are sops to agro-chemical and genetic engineering interests which most environmentalists would find unacceptable. But in many ways it is dynamite.
