Professional Development in an undergraduate health care Management Program: A case study in TEACHING ADJUNCT FACULTY ABOUT STUDENT COMPETENCIES

摘要

Faculty development can include interventions to engage faculty in the process of curricular change and to help individual faculty members improve their teaching skills. The faculty in an undergraduate Healthcare Management (HCM) Program at a large, urban university determined that moving to a curriculum based on emerging standards for competencies was necessary to teach effectively and to evaluate students at the undergraduate level. The competencies were derived from the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA) and the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) guidelines. To address this transition, several initiatives were implemented such as new competency-based student assessments and revised syllabi. Anewfaculty development program was designed, developed, and implemented for adjunct faculty members. This case study may be useful to others who seek to implement curricular change and improve teaching skills via faculty development for adjunct faculty members.
