Hydroponic Update

Interest in hydroponic or non-soil/substrate based growing techniques has taken a huge leap forward during recent years, and it is estimated that the global commercial hydroponics industry has grown massively during the last 10 years. Although it is impossible to predict exactly how big the area is and what the industry is worth, the best guess is that it currently accounts for 30,000 to 35,000-hectares with a farm gate value of in excess of US 10 billion dollar. Even so, Fargro's Jim McAlpine is notentirely convinced that growers will eventually shun substrates infavour of other hydroponic products, such as Rock Wool.
