Learning in surgery: practice meets theory

Today's undergraduate medical students are under increasing pressure to develop speciality preferences early. Competition for surgical specialist training posts is fierce, and trainees commit themselves to a speciality within 2 years of finishing medical school. As a result, the undergraduate years are increasingly playing an important role in providing the surgical experience that helps junior doctors determine their career preferences.
