GAO: EPA's Progress in Improving IRIS Limited

A Government Accounting Office (GAO) report reviewing EPA’s progress in improving its Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) says the agency has made recommended changes related to transparency, but progress in other areas "has been limited." GAO says EPA’s initial gains in productivity under the revised process begun in 2009 have not been sustained, and that there are signs that the initial progress was not related to fundamental changes to the agency's IRIS procedures. The agency’s progress has also been limited in completing assessments that it classifies as exceptionally complex and reducing its ongoing assessments workload, the report says.
