A roundtable discussion between Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) representatives and journalists at UTECH Europe 2015 busted some myths around the incineration of end-of-life polyurethanes. The closed discussion, entitled Do you think in life cycles? was held at the firm's stand on the first day of the exhibition and conference. Christoph Gurtler, head of the BMS catalysis programme, business unit polyurethanes, said: "Burning could the most economical way to deal with waste material as recycling can cause an even higher carbon footprint than producing new materials. As chemicals used in the production of PU are banned by the EU under REACH regulations it has to be taken out of the material. That process uses up more energy than just burning it." He said the chemical industry is also able to harness the energy from the CO2 produced by burning.
