Don't look now, but India's production of value-added fishery products is gearing up in earnest. At the same time, the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) and the Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAT) are combining their talents to coordinate promotions designed to bolster the image of Indian offerings around the globe. "We are one of the largest suppliers of shrimp to the US market, but if you go to a restaurant in America you will not see Indian shrimp highlighted on menus- even if the shrimp has in fact been sourced from India," pointed out A.J. Tharakan, national president of SEAI, during a recent meeting with this writer in Cochin, Kerala. "What is required now is a generic promotion campaign focusing on Indian shrimpand cephalopods."
