The pursuit of sustainable business excellence: Guiding transformation for effective organizational change

Sometime or other business firms reach unknown environmental conditions in which they must either transform themselves to survive or they just decline and disappear. Achieving conventional business excellence - assessed with frameworks such as the Baldridge Award, the European Quality Award, etc. has proven useful as long as the competitive environment remains stable or most of its key parameters change in a predictive manner. However, under unpredictable environmental change, these frameworks are no longer adequate. In such cases, survival takes priority over the usual criteria of success. For these reasons, management must develop a bio-modal approach in which during periods of turbulence, the criteria for success become the need for organizational resistance and for business landscape fitness. This capacity to shift operating management modes and the criteria of success, when environmental conditions demand it, is sustainable business excellence (SBE).
