While it's certainly less common in services than in materials, several buyers told Purchasing they have used reverse auctions in services spend areas. Dean Edwards, CPO at Kaiser Permanente, says his company reverse auctioned a consulting services contract. "We used the reverse auction to just set some rate competition in the consultant spend area, but that is really only the start of the process," he says. "The rate is such a small part of determining the cost of the service. But a reverse auction does help drive some transparency into the cost of the service."
